In 1926, by ministerial decision, a committee was appointed to collect donations for the erection of a commemorative column in the square of the Ascension in Gaios in honor of the Paxi residents who fell during the national wars of 1912-1922.
The committee appealed for the collection of the required amount from all Paxi residents and expatriates. The commission was given to the sculptor E. Mavroudis, and the works were overseen by Mr. Thomas Vellianitis, Director of Local Administration of the Ministry of the Interior, Konstantinos Makris, lieutenant colonel of infantry, and Spyros H. Goulios, employee of the British Embassy.
The column is 4.25 meters high and depicts on one side Greece/Victory, holding a laurel wreath in her hand, with the years 1912-1922 written above her.
On the other side, the names of the fallen are inscribed. On the eastern facade, and above Victory, the name of the incendiary, Georgios Anemogiannis, is written in golden letters.
The column arrived on the island by the steamship "Petros" and was placed in the square by the craftsman Panagiotis Skaris.
The unveiling took place on October 18, 1931.
