Mill of Kastanida (1860)

More than 20 windmills are known to us, which have been declared protected by the Ministry of Culture and are safeguarded by the competent Antiquities Authority.

They are circular constructions that include four windows positioned around the top and have an internal stone staircase. They have a base called "kotornos," twice the diameter. Some are constructed with a pseudo-ashlar system, while others with irregular stones. From 1650 to 1900, they ground wheat, oats, and barley produced on the island. All the mills are privately owned and have been designated as monuments of historical cultural heritage since 1985.
