Mantropoulos Cistern

image

MANTROPOULOS CISTERN

(A little outside the settlement of Gaios, 350m from the stern of Agii Apostoli, next to the peripheral road)

It is round (with a diameter of 15m), paved with stone fencing, with a stepped entrance (four steps) with two square columns, bearing inscriptions in Greek and English, in honor of the overseer Thomas Galloway 1832. In the middle, on a raised circular level, is the main well. On top of it, there is a large wellhead with a carved marble wreath, showing the stone's wear from the ropes of the bucket. It collects water from a spring (underground), when there are heavy rains, and then the water, through an overflow system, descends to the stern of Agii Apostoli.
